What’s in Our Backpacks? A Peek at First Week Must-Haves

The first week of daycare is always filled with excitement—new faces, fresh routines, and lots of learning and play! At Lyndon Learning Childcare, we know how important it is for children to feel prepared, comfortable, and confident as they step into this new environment.

One way parents can help set their child up for a great day is by making sure their backpack is packed with a few thoughtful essentials. While it doesn’t need to be stuffed full, having the right items can make all the difference in helping your child feel secure and ready for the day ahead.

So, what goes into the perfect preschool backpack? Let’s take a peek inside!

🎒 1. A Full Change of Clothes (or Two!)

Spills, messy art projects, and bathroom accidents happen—especially when you’re learning and growing every day! That’s why we always recommend packing a complete change of clothes (including underwear and socks), just in case.

Pro tip: Put the extra outfit in a labeled ziplock bag to keep it clean and separate from used clothes that might be sent home.

🧸 2. A Comfort Item from Home

For many little ones, having a familiar object close by can help ease any first-day jitters. This might be a soft stuffed animal, a small blanket, or even a laminated family photo.

Why we love it: These items help children feel safe and connected, especially during quiet time or when emotions run high.

🥤 3. A Refillable Water Bottle

Staying hydrated is important for busy little learners! Please pack a spill-proof water bottle that your child can open independently. We’ll encourage water breaks throughout the day to keep everyone feeling their best.

Reminder: Be sure to label the bottle with your child’s name, and we’ll make sure it returns home each day for a quick wash.

📚 4. A Favorite Book for Sharing

Some families like to include a favorite book in their child’s backpack during the first week. Whether it’s a comfort read from home or a story they want to share with their classmates, books are a wonderful way for children to express their interests.

At Lyndon Learning, we love story time and often invite children to bring in a special book to read together as a class.

👟 5. Appropriate Footwear for Play

While this one may not go in the backpack itself, it’s worth mentioning! Make sure your child is wearing closed-toe shoes with rubber soles—perfect for outdoor adventures and indoor fun. Flip-flops and sandals can be tricky during active play.

🖼️ Optional Extras: Art Folder or Family Drawing

Some families like to include a small art folder for bringing home crafts, or a hand-drawn note or picture from a parent. These little touches can go a long way in making a child’s day feel extra special.

What We Don’t Recommend Packing:

To keep our classroom safe and focused, we kindly ask that the following items stay at home:

  • Toys with small parts or electronics

  • Snacks (we provide nutritious meals and snacks throughout the day)

  • Medications (unless previously arranged with staff)

If you’re ever unsure about what to pack, just ask—we’re happy to help!

Building Confidence One Backpack at a Time

Packing a backpack is more than just gathering supplies—it’s a chance to prepare your child emotionally for their day, build independence, and create a comforting connection between home and school.

At Lyndon Learning Childcare, we love seeing how each backpack reflects a child’s personality and needs. Whether it’s a superhero-themed bag, a sparkly unicorn backpack, or a well-worn favorite handed down from a sibling, each one carries the tools a child needs to succeed.

We’re so excited to welcome your little learner and look forward to a joyful, fun-filled year together!
